Sevan Bıçakçı: The Turkish Master Jeweller Behind These Extraordinary Rings

At first glance, you might assume these rings are three-dimensional sculptures – a tiny mosque and leaping dolphin seemingly suspended beneath layers of resin or glass. The illusion is so striking, it feels almost impossible that these miniature worlds are not separate objects placed beneath the stone.

The reality is even more extraordinary.

These depictions are not embedded at all. They are meticulously hand-etched into rock crystal using an ancient technique known as reverse intaglio, mastered by celebrated Turkish jeweller Sevan Bıçakçı. Working from the back of a translucent gemstone, Bıçakçı carves intricate details in reverse, allowing the image to appear three-dimensional and almost floating when viewed from the front.

Encapsulated beneath faceted, domed rock crystal, each carving becomes a mesmerising architectural or natural miniature. The effect is both surreal and poetic – a hidden world revealed through light and precision, resting just within your hand.

Bıçakçı typically sets these works of art atop ornate bands crafted from both warm golds and cool silvers, adorned with gemstones and intricate patterns. Each setting is thoughtfully designed to complement the hues and spirit of the masterpiece / miniature world held within.

Bıçakçı’s work embodies his signature fusion of Ottoman artistry and contemporary fine jewellery craftsmanship. Each piece is not merely worn, but experienced.

Below are two of Bıçakçı’s rings we have the pleasure of stocking in our collection, one ring captures a dolphin leaping from tranquil ocean depths, its movement frozen in crystalline clarity beneath a blue rock crystal dome. Another unveils a beautifully detailed mosque, a sacred architectural marvel rendered in miniature form, glowing softly through the faceted stone.

These rings are more than jewellery – they are wearable works of art, testaments to patience, mastery and imagination. Through reverse intaglio, Sevan Bıçakçı transforms gemstones into portals, inviting us to peer into worlds carved by hand, light and legacy.
