Article: The Rise of Pre-Owned Luxury, Vintage & Antique Jewellery

The Rise of Pre-Owned Luxury, Vintage & Antique Jewellery

The Rise of Pre-Owned Luxury, Vintage & Antique Jewellery

Buying pre-owned luxury jewellery, whether it be modern, vintage or antique, is no longer simply about finding a piece at a lower price. For many contemporary buyers and collectors, it is a gateway to jewels that can no longer be found new: from limited-edition and highly sought-after modern designs with scarce availability, to discontinued collections, rare vintage and antique pieces, iconic archival jewellery, and craftsmanship with a depth of character that is becoming increasingly difficult to find in modern production.

Part of the appeal lies in discovery. A pre-owned jewel can offer something more individual than a current-season piece: a design from a past collection, a vintage ring with history, an antique brooch with character, or a signed designer piece that is no longer available in boutiques. For many buyers, this sense of rarity and provenance is what makes pre-owned jewellery so compelling.

The pre-owned luxury market is no longer niche; it is growing quickly. Bain & Company and Altagamma estimated the global second-hand luxury market at €50 billion in 2025, with sales rising by 4% to 6% compared with 2024. Jewellery and watches accounted for around 83% of all second-hand luxury sales, showing how central pre-owned luxury jewellery and watches have become to the wider luxury resale market.

Demand is also expected to continue growing. The global luxury resale market is forecast to reach an estimated $60.11 billion by 2030, according to The Business Research Company’s 2026 luxury resale market report.

This growth is being driven by several factors. Rising retail prices have made many buyers more thoughtful and selective about how they purchase luxury, encouraging them to look for pieces that feel not only beautiful, but considered, valuable and lasting.

At the same time, pre-owned jewellery offers access. It opens the door to rare, discontinued and harder-to-find pieces that may no longer be available or easily accessible new - allowing buyers to discover designs, brands and eras that are often absent from the current retail market.

There is also the growing appeal of treasure hunting and collecting, a passion that has become increasingly prevalent across the luxury world, from fashion and handbags to sneakers and watches. In jewellery, this instinct is especially powerful. The search for a rare vintage jewel, an iconic archival piece, an antique design or a discontinued designer creation gives buyers the chance to own something distinctive, meaningful and difficult to replace.

Sustainability is another factor driving the growth of the pre-owned contemporary, vintage and antique jewellery market. It offers a more conscious way to buy luxury, allowing buyers to enjoy exceptional beauty, quality and craftsmanship while extending the life of existing pieces, embracing a more circular model of ownership and supporting a more responsible approach to luxury consumption. In this sense, choosing pre-owned jewellery is not only about style or rarity, but about valuing what already exists and reducing the need for constant new production.

For collectors and style-led buyers alike, the appeal is not purely financial. It is emotional, aesthetic and personal. In a world of constant newness, overproduction and mass availability, pre-owned, vintage and antique jewellery offers something more enduring: craftsmanship, character, rarity, and a connection to a time gone by.

Luxury companies themselves are also adapting to reflect this shift. Deloitte’s Global Powers of Luxury 2026 report found that 53.8% of luxury companies now operate certified pre-owned or trade-in programmes, while 68.3% offer repair or refurbishment services. This shows that resale, repair and circular luxury are becoming more established within the luxury industry itself.

The rise of pre-owned contemporary, vintage and antique jewellery is therefore not simply a trend. It reflects a wider shift in how people are choosing to buy, collect and value jewellery today. The most desirable pieces are not always the newest; sometimes they are the ones that can no longer be found in boutiques, can no longer be made in the same way, and can only be discovered through the pre-owned market.
